Bring on the Fat Season

geek fitness

A brief update on what’s going on with me and my geeky fitness routine.

So the last 2 months I’ve really been trying to put on some lean muscle before the fat season begins.  I can’t say that I’ve “bulked up” but I put on a decent amount of weight without any additional fat mass.

I used a lot of heavy weights, large movements, and long rest periods.  Oh yeah, I also stuffed my face with plenty of healthy, organic and damn good tasting food.

On a side note; Whole Foods has this bacon that I swear is about as thick as a leather belt.  No joke.

From now until Thanksgiving I’ll be using a drawn out version of Mike and Alwyns Warp Speed Fat Loss.  It won’t be as intense, but all the principals will be the same.  I’m too much of a wuss to do their program.  Even if it is just 28 days long.  Way too brutal for me.  Plus, Halloween is right around the corner.  I loves me some kit kat bars, reeses, and M&Ms.  That’s really why I’m doing all of this.  So I can enjoy my favorite seasons without the worry of putting on too much body fat.

Well there it is.  My weak attempt at an update.  I’ll leave you with a clip from my last heavy workout I did this past week.  I eventually got my dead lift back to 365 pounds.  Not bad for someone who had a jacked neck and a dislocated rib just 4 months prior.

4 Foods for More Fat Loss

by Mike Roussell PhD(c)

http://www.thebuffgeek.com/warpspeedfatloss.php

What foods should I eat for maximum fat loss? This is a common question that I get from clients and friends. There is so much new information out there everyday “X food is now good for you but Y food is now bad.” How can you possibly sort through all the junk science and sensational reporting to truly find out which foods will help you lose weight and which foods won’t?

Let me help. Here’s a look at foods that you should eat to maximize fat loss. These foods are listed in no particular order because they are all important.

1. Salmon

fat loss

While salmon was once demonized by the fitness community in the 90’s because of it’s fat content (I actually saw it in an article about ‘Foods to avoid for fat loss’) we now know that the long chain omega-3 fats found in salmon are the best kind. Research has shown that these fats can actually help you burn more fat. Salmon also contains high levels of protein – it is really the perfect package.

2. Almonds

fat loss

Almonds are a great fat loss snack. Almonds are extremely convenient, portable, and they have a long shelf life. You should keep a small bag of almonds at your desk, in your briefcase, or backpack as an emergency weight loss snack. Almonds contain fat, fiber, and protein – all of which will help curb your hunger. They are also low in carbohydrates and provide your body with energy while keeping your blood sugar levels under control.

3. Broccoli

broccolli, fat loss

Broccoli is a true superfood. From a health perspective they contain antioxidants and phytochemicals that have been shown to help fight cancer. There is also some evidence to suggest that another compounds found in broccoli, Calcium D-glucarate, can bind excess estrogen in the body. It is a low impact carb with a nice dose of fiber. You can buy it fresh or frozen (broccoli cuts or florets – go with the florets). The bottom line is Eat Broccoli Often.

4. Green Tea

green tea

Green tea is another powerful food, like broccoli, that will have huge impacts on your fat loss and health. Green tea can be an acquired taste for some people as if you let it steep to long (e.g. leave the tea bag in the water) it can be very bitter. You can drink it hot or cold (if you opt for cold you may need to add a little splenda). Green tea contains cancer fighting compounds, not to mention antioxidants, caffeine, and the fat burning powerhouse EGCG. Research has shown that the combination of caffeine and EGCG (which is naturally combined in green tea) can help burn extra fat. Drink 2-3 cups a day. In fact I’m drinking some right now!

There you have it four time tested and research proven foods to help you burn more fat. If you aren’t eating (or drinking) all of these foods daily (or at least every couple days) then you are not doing everything possible to burn maximum fat. Add them to your diet, get healthier, and burn more fat.

Marriott and Nintendo Join Forces

marriott, nintendo

It looks like Nintendo and Marriott are currently testing out a potential partnership.

As a test Nintendo will be outfitting several Marriots with units of the Wii specifically made just for them.

There will be a variety of different games offered, one of which is Wii Fit.  I’ve spoken to many a geeks who have trouble fitting in their workout routines just because of travel.  Now I know working out on the Wii Fit doesn’t seem to offer the same benefits as hitting the hotel gym but at least it’s something.  And if you’re familiar with my content you’d know I prefer doing a good bodyweight routine in my hotel room as opposed to using some crappy and potentially dangerous machine found down in one of those factory style gyms.

I think this partnership is a great idea and it only seems natural.  Where other gaming units have failed in the past I think the Wii is actually a really good fit.

Let’s hope this works out for the sake of Nintendo, Marriot and the few who would benefit from a little extra activity when on the road.

I’m interested.  What are some of the things you have tried when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle when traveling?
